The gas station, it's all but abandoned, sits at 1029 S. Laredo, in San Antonio. That's within Bexar County Line, obviously. It's a favorite image because it does appear to be the last extant "gas station" like this, just about anywhere.

Historically, the station was probably built 1928, 1929, and like some other San Antonio landmarks, suffered with the economic collapse of the time. Perhaps it was bad timing.

The station was awarded a "This place matters," narrowly edging out some stiff competition; however, as far as the survey shows, there's still been no work what-so-ever on restoration, renovation or even conservation.

The last Humble Oils Gas Station represents an era when the car was new, and this location, a scant mile from the city's center, was the beginning of the suburbs, at one time.

History in the making.

Perhaps, or maybe just a forgotten part of local history that somehow got bypassed and now sits in the shadow of the super-highway.

The doors and windows are sealed shut with bricks, the owner never returns messages, while the title and deed lead to a shell corporation in the current suburbs.

The last filling station.
